06/05/2007 - Far Hills, NJ (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The last of the U.S. Open sectional qualifiers were held Monday to determine the field for next week at Oakmont Country Club.
Some top players made it. Some did not.
Ryder Cup teammates Darren Clarke and Paul McGinley were among the players who failed to make it through the 36-hole qualifier at Walton Heath in Surrey, England.
For Clarke, it marked just the second time since 1997 that he failed to qualify for the U.S. Open.
"The current state of my game is not good for the U.S. Open anyway, so it is maybe not such a bad thing," said Clarke, who went 3-0 in Europe's Ryder Cup win last year while playing a little more than a month after his wife's death.
The nine spots available at the Surrey qualifier went to Nick Dougherty, Darren Fichardt, Peter Hanson, Marcus Fraser, Graeme McDowell, Miguel Rodriguez, Samuel Walker, Soren Kjeldsen and Christian Cevaer -- all Europeans.
Dougherty, Fichardt and Hanson were co-medalists at eight-under 136.
Other notables who failed to qualify at Walton Heath included former Ryder Cup player Miguel Angel Jimenez, Notah Begay III, Jean Van de Velde, and U.S. amateurs Garrett Osborn and Nathan Smith.
Across the Atlantic Ocean, most of the top PGA Tour players attempting to qualify were in Ohio.
One qualifier at Scioto Country Club in Columbus produced a thrilling finish when Anthony Kim won an 11-man playoff for the 24th and final spot available for 144 players.
Bubba Watson and Ryan Moore earned co-medalist honors at Scioto with six-under 136 totals. Among the players who joined them in qualifying were Camilo Villegas, Sean O'Hair, Boo Weekley and amateur Trip Kuehne.
Mark Calcavecchia, Jesper Parnevik, Ryder Cup captain Tom Lehman and two-time major winner Mark O'Meara all failed to make it through the Scioto qualifier.
At another qualifier in Columbus, Jason Kokrak and Tom Gillis shared medalists honors to claim two of the four spots up for grabs.
At Colonial Country Club in Memphis, Tennessee, 16 players earned trips to Oakmont.
Darron Stiles led the way with rounds of 69-62, while 1995 PGA Championship winner Steve Elkington and Olin Browne were among the other qualifiers. John Daly opened with a 73 and then withdrew, joining the majority of the field of 117 who did not qualify.
Fred Funk was among three players who qualified at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland, before play was suspended. A three-man playoff on Tuesday will decide the final two spots.
Play was not completed at two other sites because of inclement weather: Purchase, New York; and Dallas, Texas. There are six spots available in those three qualifiers.
There were qualifiers held at seven other sites Monday.

Academy Award Betting Odds for Best Picture Offer Great Value
If there is any category that is not an obvious win for any one nominee in this year's Academy Awards, it would be for Best Picture. Sure the Departed is a 5/7 favorite, but that's hardly anything when we look at Helen Mirren and her "out-of-reach" 1 to 40 odds (which means you would win a whopping $1 for every $40 bet).
For value, take a look at MySportsbook.com Oscars betting odds on my personal favorite, The Queen - a remarkable 12 to 1 long shot. The film hasn't won any pre-awards for Best Picture (compared to The Departed and Little Miss Sunshine), but there is a tremendous following and it is a strong enough film to warrant a surprise win.
TV Guide advises Oscar watchers should be cautioned not to discount the drama "Babel" with its strong social themes about overcoming communication gaps among people of different cultures.
"While 'Babel' lost several guild awards to 'Sunshine' and 'Departed,' it still enjoys loyal support, and historically Oscar voters favor dramas with social messages over comedies like 'Sunshine' and violent crime movies like 'Departed'."
"It hasn't done well in the guilds, which means there isn't much industry support," said Tom O'Neil of awards site TheEnvelope.com, "But several critics are expecting it to win, and that gets my attention." Babel had 7 to 2 odds at press time.
Who is to say independently produced Little Miss Sunshine won't be this year's Crash. Last year, Crash won for Best Motion Picture, shocking those who bet on gay cowboy flick, Brokeback Mountain, as the favorite to win.
